Can I use CitationControl?

The latest version of CitationControl (v1.09) comes only in one flavor. Articles are searched for in pubmed. Following this citations, references and related articles are first obtained from PubMed. If no results are returned, the search is extended to ISI WOS. Alternatively, you can force citation and reference searches from ISI WOS directly. You can use one of the three flavors of CitationControl 1.07 beta. If you don't have access to either the scopus or the ISI websites through your institution, you can use the pubmed version. The main caveat with this version is that obtaining references, citations, related articles and indexing is only possible for articles that are freely available in Pubmed Central.

Which operating systems are supported?

Currently Windows (XP, Vista and 7) has been tested. Executables for Mac OSX and Linux are coming soon. For these OSes, you can checkout the code from svn, fulfil the dependencies (python 2.6 or 2.7, pyqt4, biopython, mechanize, BeautifulSoup), and get this running. The svn repository can be accessed by svn co https://citationcontrol.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/citationcontrol/CitationControl_pubmed citationcontrol. Remember to move the two configuration files one directory above.

Are you affiliated with the publishers or the site?

No. This is just an educational accessory.

Why has scopus been dropped?

I lack institutional access to this excellent resource. However, if you do have access and are so inclined, please patch the source code. These will be included in the next version.

Is it free?

What bugs do I expect to see?

The website is not readable on some browsers. This is a browser issue. The site works well on google chrome and firefox, but so-so on Explorer. For this reason, there is a link above the features list on the main page that allows you to navigate to all the relevant pages on this site.
At times, only 10 citations are obtained. This is a bug which will be fixed in upcoming releases.
In any tab, if you download searchable text for multiple articles, say 100, and then close the tab, downloading will continue for at least five articles in the closed tab.
~~The filtering text input boxes for journal, author, tags, etc. are case sensitive (This will be fixed in future versions).~~ This has been fixed in the latest version.
If multiple tabs are opened and closed rapidly before downloads finish, then the database writing gets corrupted. You might have to restart the program if that happens. One indication of this is that the 'working' icon in the title of the tab never changes to 'done'(green circle). This has been fixed in the latest version.
In proxy settings, some passwords just don't work. This has to do with the password encryption I use. This will be fixed in future versions, if anyone encounters this error.
Some pdfs are downloaded incorrectly (e.g. addendums, comments, error articles). You will have to download the article and then add it as a local file if that happens.

What enhancements will be seen in future versions?

~~Currently, article searches are very slow. This will be fixed in the next version.~~ This has been fixed in the latest version.
Many people already have a database of downloaded article pdfs. In the next version, you will be able to add this database (select a folder of pdfs or select multiple pdfs) and add it to your searchable database. This has been fixed in the latest version.
A Mac version and a linux .deb will soon be added.
~~Allow saving notes for any particular record.~~This has been added in the latest version v1.06 beta.

I have found a bug in the program.

Please check the forum if anyone has posted a solution to the problem. Else, post your bug on the forum with steps needed to reproduce the problem.

If you would like to make monetary contributions towards the project, just choose the donate button on the main page. If you are a developer, please unzip the source code. See the source code link on the main page. Please post any changes that you think are worth making. The code requires a lot of refactoring, but it works at this point. Alternatively, you can contribute to improving the website or even testing the program and posting bug reports.
